BOP lifeguards to represent NZ

Lifeguards from Mount Maunganui and Papamoa will represent New Zealand at the Sanyo Cup in Japan during June, followed by the World Games in Poland taking place in July.

Six members of the Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service and three from the Papamoa Life Saving Club will represent New Zealand at the 2017 Sanyo Cup and World Games.

The Sanyo Cup is an annual beach competition held in Japan, and this year's event will see the Kiwis compete against teams from Australia, USA, Great Britain, Netherlands, South Africa, Hong Kong and Japan at the Momochihama Seaside Park in Fukuoka from June 24-25.

The New Zealand team of 10 athletes, five male and five female, includes Mount lifeguards and 2016 Lifesaving World Championship members Hamish Miller and Libby Bradley.

Joining them is fellow Mountie Jessica Miller who represented New Zealand at last year's Sanyo Cup, along with newcomers to SLSNZ's High Performance programme Lincoln Waide and Oliver Puddick.

Following on from the Sanyo Cup will be the World Games, a multi-sport event which is taking place this year in Wroclaw, Poland, from July 20-30.

The World Games team includes 2016 Lifesaving World Championship Black Fins member Natalie Peat who is joined by fellow Papamoa lifeguards Madison Kidd and Jacob Hales, and Adam Simpson from the Mount.

SLSNZ sport manager Mike Lord says the World Games is another step for their high performance athletes in measuring themselves against our international opponents.

"New Zealand has a long history of being leaders in surf sports and we're looking forward to the opportunity to measure our progress at this stage of our campaign heading towards the 2018 Lifesaving World Championships.

'This team is an exciting mix of skill and experience and it will be a great opportunity for them to make an impression on an international stage as they will all be pushing for a place in the teams for Rescue 2018 which builds great depth in our High Performance programme.”

The lifesaving component of the World Games will be a pool competition held from July 21-22, and will see the Kiwis face off against teams from Australia, Belgium, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Poland and Spain.
