Third challenge for waka ama crews

Waka ama crews from all over the North Island converged on Tauranga shores to take part in the third series of waka ama canoe races.

Hoe Aroha committee spokesperson Naomi Kerapa says they have races every two months over the winter period.

'Our second one was cancelled due to (poor) weather conditions.

'Today we had teams from Wellington, Gisborne, Hastings, Auckland and Tauranga.”

The Hoe Aroha waka ama committee held its third series race in the Tauranga Harbour.

The race involved two different courses, an 18km course and 10km one.

'The 10km is for novice racers and the 18km is for W6 paddlers men, women and mixed teams.”

Naomi says their text race will be on October 22, which will be their last one for the year.

'We will start up again in April.”
