Top school rugby teams found

The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Secondary Schools Rugby finals played at Murray Salt Stadium in Te Puke at the weekend showcased the best young rugby talent in the Bay of Plenty before a large and appreciative crowd of family and rugby followers.

The main event on ‘Super Saturday' was the first XV division one final between defending champions Western Heights High School and Otumoetai College.

Described as an outstanding display of open running rugby by both teams, Otumoetai College, which finished as the top qualifier, took advantage of playing with the wind in the first half to lead 9-3 at the halftime break courtesy of three successful penalty goals to one.

While there was a good even battle contested in the rucks and mauls, the Western Heights forwards won plenty of quality ball in the scrums.

Otumoetai infringements at breakdowns in play were turned into points by Jordan Ngamata-Poi, who calmly slotted five penalty goals as his team took out their second successive div one title 15-9.

Western Heights management praised the performance of their tight five led by Dion Manga.

Jordan Fiola had a strong game at the back of the scrum, with outstanding defence shown by Brook Amon and Jordan Ngamata-Poi. Tawhiao Morrison and Evan Groves also shone on the day, looking dangerous on attack each time they had the ball in hand.

The Western Heights management also praised the Otumoetai commitment, which resulted in the div one final being a worthy showcase of secondary school rugby in the Bay of Plenty.

Bethlehem College, which is arguably the most improved team in the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic competition this season, held aloft the division two trophy in triumph after defeating Taupo Nui A Tia.

In what was an intriguing battle, the Western Bay school grabbed the ascendancy to take out the title decider from the game Taupo School 20-7.

An Eastern Bay derby took centre stage on field two at Murray Salt Stadium in the second XV final between Trident High School and Opotiki College.

In what turned out to be a high scoring affair, Opotiki College triumphed when they defeated Trident High School 34-19.

The under-14 premiership final was taken out by Rotorua Boys' High which defeated Trident High School.

The first Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Rugby title was taken out last Tuesday night, when the under-15 premiership final was played as the curtain raiser to the Steamers ITM Cup match-up with Canterbury at Baypark Stadium.

Top qualifier, Mount Maunganui College, faced off against Trident High School.

The Eastern Bay School took a 7-3 lead into halftime before the Mount College came back to hold a 17-7 advantage entering the final quarter. However, three tries in the last ten minutes from Trident resulted in a 24-17 victory.
