A Mr G original at the Mount

Mr G unveils his newest mural today.

Internationally acclaimed Kiwi artist Graham Hoete, also known as Mr G, is unveiling a new mural today.

Mr G has created many pieces over the years to represent Maori culture, using street art as a canvas to showcase famous individuals.

This week, Mr G has returned home to work on something close to his heart.

Today at 2pm, he is revealing his newest piece of art to the public. A mural on the water tank on Mauao.

The theme of this work is kaitiakitanga, which translates to guardianship. It is also about the Mana Moana, Mana Tangata, Mana Whenua message and movement.

'To me it represents the unity of the local iwi to protect the land,” says Mr G speaking to SunLive ahead of the unveiling.

'This piece holds a lot of meaning. It's a symbol of our iwi, and it stands on Mauao which is an important location in our culture.

'The works I do are inspired by what's important to me, what I love. This one is no different.”

The local iwi Ngai Te Rangi has been working with Mr G to prepare the unveiling, including preparing a mass haka and a blessing for the mural. A drone will also be there to take pictures of the piece with the crowd.

'We have a lot of interest on Facebook. It's been crazy, so I'm expecting a large crowd and a lot of support.”

Everyone is welcome to attend this unveiling, no matter age, gender, or culture. Taking part in the drone photo is also open to all.
