For the first time in 10 years, New Zealand's leading contemporary dance company Black Grace will return to Baycourt Community & Arts Centre to perform its beautiful new work As Night Falls.

Proudly presented by Tour-Makers and part of an extensive eight-centre national tour, this one-night only Tauranga show takes place at Baycourt Addison Theatre on Thursday, July 6.

Set to the timeless and passionate music of Italian Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi, As Night Falls is founding Black Grace artistic director Neil Ieremia's ‘poetic ode to our troubled world'.

'As Night Falls is bold and bright like the colourful muumuu dresses worn by my mother without shame or ceremony,” says Ieremia.

'I had initially wanted this work to be the expression of my concerns and fears of the darkness that seems to be eroding the value of equality and human life. Instead, I feel compelled to respond with a contrasting beauty and physical vitality, musicality and hope. It is my offer of beauty for ashes.”

Motivated to provide a different perspective and a fresh voice in the dance scene, Ieremia founded Black Grace with ten male dancers of Pacific, Māori and New Zealand heritage back in 1995.

Since its inception, Black Grace has gone on to change the face of contemporary dance in New Zealand and the company also regularly tours internationally to Europe, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Australia and New Caledonia.

Featuring some of New Zealand's finest dancers, the works presented by Black Grace are highly physical, rich in the story telling traditions of the South Pacific, and expressed with raw finesse, unique beauty and power.

'It's both a privilege and an honour for Baycourt to play host to Black Grace, they are an amazing dance company with a world-class reputation for producing exquisite works that leave audiences mesmerised and spellbound,” says Baycourt manager Megan Peacock-Coyle.

'On top of this, it's been almost a decade since Black Grace last performed here at Baycourt, so we are absolutely delighted and thrilled the company is bringing As Night Falls to Addison Theatre.”
