'We beat Hamilton Boys' College 10-7 in the final on Friday,” says Johnson.

'The boys played really well – two boys were out with broken hand and one had a dislocated shoulder; we were like the walking wounded really.”

He says they were the only unbeaten side out of the 16 teams which played in the tournament.

The week-long tournament saw 16 teams from around the country compete in the tournament hosted by Hastings Boys' College.

'We played in a series of round robin tournaments. We played Palmerston Boys' in the quarter final. We won that game 34-nil.”

'We played Napier Boys' in the semi-finals and beat them 37-12.”

Johnson says the boys were each presented with a bag full of sporting gear and the captain accepted the Alan Wagner Sportsmanship trophy on behalf of the team at a presentation ceremony after the tournament.

Tauranga Boys' College student Christian Kelly was presented the top try scorer trophy, while fellow team mate Caleb Aperahama received the player of the tournament trophy.

Johnson says they also received $250 worth of vouchers to be used at a sports store.
