People in Tauranga are continuing to receive computer repair scam phone calls months after police first warned the public.
Senior Sergeant Rob Glencross says Tauranga police are receiving complaints every day from people who have received calls advising them their computer has a virus.
The scam involves cold calls being made to people advising them that their computer has a virus.
'The caller ‘helpfully' takes you through a series of steps giving them remote access to your PC and showing you where the virus is,” says Rob.
'The caller then offers to sell a service contract and takes credit card details as payment.
'Unfortunately there is no virus and the potential now exists that spyware has been loaded providing remote access to all the information on the computer including bank details, email lists, and information of a personal nature.”
Police advise anyone receiving such a call to simply hang up.
'Under no circumstances give anyone information enabling them to remotely access your computer nor should you give anyone your credit card details,” says Rob.
If anyone suspects there is a problem with their computer they should take it to a local service provider to be checked.
The scam caller often declares they are working for the ‘Global Computer Maintenance Department of the World'.

I have had these people ring 3 times so far. First time i hang up straight away. Second time i let them talk for awhile and then asked for THEIR credit card details to be able to continue the conversation. I got give some random numbers that didn't make sense. So told them politely to go away. Third time i pretended to be very concerned and did what the "Not the News journalist" did. Satisfying. I wonder what game i can play next time??

As a committee member of the Home Computer Club, I have told members to tell them "I don't have a computer"... problem solved. They hang up. Telecom fraud squad cannot trace overseas numbers, from which these calls are made.
Telecom?

To kiaora2u - Telecom "can't" or Telecom "won't"?! Do you seriously think that a company with international reach and massive influence in the telecommunications industry, "can't" trace these calls? Bull! My advice for everybody - although i have not had these phone calls myself - is to invest in a very high pitched horn and blast the eardrums of the caller. This way, everyone here would be "just waiting" for the next call they got, lol. That would be hilarious. The scumbag callers would have bleeding ears and would probably quit their scam jobs!

I get at least 1 call a week from these scammers and after making sure my modem is turned off I pretend to go along with their instructions and after a while I say my screen has gone blue and this really worries them so they try again with the instructions and then I say my screen has gone green. Then they realise I am playing games with them and they give up.Ha Ha!!
look it up

They tried the same with me. But I never pick up unknown calls. I check them first on tellows.co.nz and report them right to the police.

Latest scam is called New Zealand Police virus - your computer gets infected and shows you a fake police warning asking to pay fee for storing illegal content. My sister was shocked, she spent a lot of time trying to remove the virus and paid money to here local computer repair guy. I found an article which describes this virus and provides removal advice: http://privacy-pc.com/how-to/guide-to-remove-new-zealand-police-virus.html
