Tauranga police uncovered a 'substantial quantity” of cannabis and a small amount of white powder when they stopped a motorist at a checkpoint over the weekend.
Sergeant Dan Roser says a 33 year old man was stopped by members of the Western Bay of Plenty Traffic Alcohol Group at about 9pm on Saturday night.

He says the man reeked of cannabis when he was stopped by police.
'He underwent the compulsory impairment test for drugged drivers, which he passed but a search of the male and his car revealed the cause of the smell,” says Dan.
He says a 'substantial quantity” of cannabis was located in the man's car along with a small amount of powder, which is thought to be methamphetamine.
'There were also several utensils and items of equipment used to manufacture drugs.
The driver admitted to police that he cultivated, manufactured and sold the drugs and that his long term drug habit had been the cause of many of his life's problems,” says Dan.
The man also passed an alcohol screening test and remarked to police that he does not drive drunk because he thought he could smoke cannabis and drive instead, says Dan.
