Bay teams post losses

A late three-try burst from the Auckland Development team blew out the scoreline in the last quarter of the match against the Bay of Plenty Development team at the weekend.


Bay halfback Lewis Hancock kicked the visitors to an early lead with two penalty goals. An even battle ensured for most of the first half before Pingi Talaapitaga crossed for a touchdown, which saw Bay of Plenty, take a 13-10 advantage into the half time break.

Auckland made the early running in the second half with two tries, before Te Hata Wilbore grabbed the Bay side's second touchdown. The successful conversion from Hancock saw the Bay trailing by just two points at 22-20.

However, late in the encounter the Auckland side ran in three quick tries to take out the match 41-20.

Bay of Plenty team management acknowledged the performances of the Bay loose forward trio of Andrew Steed, Jack Wilson and Matt Clutterbuck. Others to be singled out for praise were lock Dan Goodwin and Doug Edwards in the centres.

The Bay of Plenty Under 20 side was another to be competitive in the first half before Auckland Under 20 Development team took charge in the second spell to post a 40-10 victory. At the halftime break the Bay team were right in the match being down just 15-10, courtesy of a try to Tyson Faulkner and a penalty and conversion to Carlos Basham.

Bay Plenty also drew first blood in the match-up between the Bay Under 18 representatives and Counties Manukau, when Jordon Ngamata-Poi kicked an early penalty goal.

The Bay side showed real confidence turning down several penalty attempts to run the ball, however they were unable to cross the Counties line.

Two late first half tries to Counties saw the home side lead 14-6 at the half time break. Several Bay mistakes cost the visitors, dearly as Counties raced to a 29-6 lead.

However a last gasp try to Trent Davis which was converted by Matt Cole, resulted in Counties Manukau winning 29-13.

The Bay of Plenty Player of the Day was Beau Williams.
