Katikati hosts rep matches

Moore Park in Katikati is hosting a big day of Bay of Plenty representative rugby today with three rep teams competing in the Northern Region Rugby championships.

The Katikati Rugby Club showed its readiness to showcase rugby when they hosted a Bay of Plenty Steamers pre-season hit-out against Taranaki during June.

Such was the support and enthusiasm shown by the Katikati community in the Steamers' visit to Katikati that the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union has allocated three games of rugby to Moore Park to coincide with the great game taking centre stage during the Rugby World Cup.

A first half lead against Auckland A by the Bay Development team last weekend, showed the capabilities of the Bay second XV.

The Bay side took a 13-10 advantage into halftime and trailed by just two points entering the last quarter.

However, a late three-try burst from Auckland Development team blew out the scoreline with the Bay side eventually going down 41-20.

The Bay Development side will take a one win and one loss record, into its third round of the Northern Region Development competition at Katikati against North Harbour.

One group of development players that could have a big hand in the encounter with North Harbour are the loose forward trio of Andrew Steed, Jack Wilson and Matt Clutterbuck who played with real enthusiasm against Auckland.

A road trip is on the agenda of the Bay of Plenty Under 20 team who will play Counties Manukau in Counties.

The Bay age group team, which is finding out about life in the fast lane of the Northern Region age group competition, is yet to post a victory this season.

However, they showed against Auckland B last weekend, when they were in the match for most of the game, that they are competitive against the best teams in the competition.

Side by side curtain raisers will be on display at Moore Park.

The Bay of Plenty Under 18 team will be favoured to despatch Northland, while the Bay Under 16 side meet North Harbour.
