Tauranga City Council is reminding public to make submissions on Mauao Historic Reserve Management Plan before they close next Wednesday.

Only one week remains for public to have their say on the draft.

The council have been working closely with The Mauao Trust, who own Mauao, to establish a joint management board, called Nga Poutiriao o Mauao.

'The board has drafted a reserve management plan to achieve integrated management of the reserve and positively affect its historical, cultural, ecological and recreational values,” says TCC.

The objectives of the draft Mauao Reserve Management Plan are:

  • To protect the historical values, and meet the cultural needs of tangata whenua
  • To protect and enhance the landscape character and ecological values of the reserve
  • To continue to meet the appropriate recreational and amenity needs of residents and visitors to the city.

Submissions close at 5pm on Wednesday, September 27 and can be made at Tauranga City Council's Customer Service Centre at 91 Willow Street, at libraries around Tauranga or online.

I was quite loud too, but there didn't seem to be anyone else up there at the time to hear me.

But why no say on carparks across the road ?

Council removed all those carparks -- we used to visit the cafe's quite often but parking is now so much harder. I spoke to council, they said everyone was in favour of removing the carparks .

..which was handed back to Ngati Rangiwewehi a couple of years ago has now been fenced off and a fee will be charged (to locals and tourists) to access the area. This is supposedly for the upkeep of the area which I presume was previously council maintained. I hope that the good faith between the council, The Mauao Trust and the public continues, and this plan sounds like a good start.

WE DONT OWN IT. LET THE OWNERS look after it,but they DO NOT want to pay, funny that, its like me giving them 200 acres with gorse for free, AND THEN, they come back to me and ask me to clear it,NO WAY JOSE, want EVERYTHING for nothing, the deal is probably already done and signed off agree with all other comments, TCC DO WHAT THEY WANT,and DO NOT CARE about us,my thoughts only on this,Thankyou 10-4 out, phew.

Had to chuckle at the previous comment! "I had my say on Mauao......but there didn't seem to be anyone else up there at the time to hear me". I also agree about the lack of car parking. My comment is to always keep it free:Free from houses.Free to walk around, up and over.Free from pest plants & predatorsFreedom for native wild-life to come and go unmolested by man or beast. If in 50 to 100 years from now, the wonderful asset that is Mauao is as it is now or enhanced as nature (not man) intended, everyone concerned will have done their job of guardianship correctly.
