Bay sides seek season ending wins

The Bay of Plenty Development and Under-20 representative teams end their short and sharp Northern Region competition campaigns this weekend.

With a record of a win, draw and one loss from the three games in the Northern Region championship – the Bay of Plenty second XV will finish second in the competition if they can defeat Auckland Juniors (Under-21) at the Papatoetoe Rugby Club on Saturday.

With just a loss to Auckland Development on their ledger card, victory on the weekend would round out a successful season for the Rodney Gibbs coached side.

Last weekend a last gasp touchdown awarded to Lance MacDonald resulted in the Bay side snatching a 23-all draw with North Harbour.

While the Bay of Plenty Under-20 team has yet to post a victory in its first three Northern Region encounters, they will seek to end their season with a victory against North Harbour.

A home advantage at Blake Park Mount Maunganui could be the catalyst for victory.

Last Saturday the Bay age group team put a smile on the face of coach Marty Bourke, when they ran in three quick touchdowns, against the might of there Auckland counterparts.

While Auckland came back to take out the match, the Bay three try response showed that they can compete with the best in the competition.

A second successive victory is the prize on offer for the Bay of Plenty Under-18 team. The Under-18 side is the launching pad of the future of Bay of Plenty rugby with many of recent Steamers selections having played in the Under-18 rep grade, on their way to senior representative selection.

Last weekend they cut loose against Northland in an eight try blitz winning 51-15.

Another Bay rep side to impress last Saturday was the Under-16 side who ran away from Counties Manukau 41-3.

This weekend they are on the road travelling to Counties Manukau to meet the home side.
