The high speed broadband rollout in Tauranga is complete with 60km of fibre optic cable being deployed and installed to 147 new fibre fed cabinets.
Chorus installed the cable and the cabinets to enable broadband speeds of at least 10Mbps (mega bits per second) to homes and businesses across Tauranga.
The high speed broadband rollout in Tauranga is complete.
Chorus general manager of network build Chris Dyhrberg says about 52,000 Tauranga residents should now have access to faster internet services.
'We've extended our fibre optic cable network further into local neighbourhoods and installed new roadside cabinets.
'These cabinets provide broadband services to those customers who were previously too far from the broadband equipment in their local telephone exchange to access fast broadband.
'Service providers are already installing broadband equipment which can deliver speeds of up to 40Mbps for customers within about 1km of our cabinets.”
Tauranga customers near the local telephone exchange will continue to receive service directly from the broadband equipment located at the exchange.
Chris says in addition to completing the broadband network upgrade, Chorus has opened up access to its existing business fibre network for ultra-fast broadband services at significantly reduced prices.
'We have a large existing fibre network, particularly in the CBD area, which many internet service providers can use to connect Tauranga businesses to ultra-fast broadband today.”
Businesses wanting to know if they are in the Chorus' business fibre coverage area can do so by checking online at www.chorus.co.nz/ch-ournetwork

One would need a computer and one would also need a Broadband modem and to contact an Internet Service Provider(ISP). The ISP, would be able to connect one to the faster Broadband. I hope thou has helped one.

Why is internet so expensive in NZ when most third world countries get it so cheaply?
So, why VDSL2?

My cabinet has vdsl which is much much faster than adsl. So, why can I not subscribe to it?
ADSL+ / VDSL

I have just spent half an hour on the phone with Telecom. This is what they say. Currently in parts of Tauranga there are VDSL lines. However you need to buy a VDSL modem which will not be readily available until end 2012. A compromise is to use a ADSL2 plus modem which should give you faster speeds than the old modems, providing you are on the new fibred exchange These nodes or road side cabinets have just recently been upgraded with fibre links back to the main exchange. So in short, we are not quite there yet.It appears that we have the infrastructure in place, but not the hardware in our homes. Having surfed the www there are a few VDSL modems available on line but will they work in NZ...? The good news is, that apart from buying a new modem, there is nothing more to do or pay. No need to call Telecom to get them to switch you over, it's automatic via your new modem ( when you get it )

We are 9km from town (Welcome Bay) & are lucky if we crack 0.5 mbps. And Chorus have no plans to upgrade. Are we the forgotten ones?
