Elizabeth Street will be closed between Cameron Road and Takitimu Drive tonight, as resurfacing work continues.
Weather delays means the work, which was supposed to conclude on Tuesday night, will carry on between 7pm and 6am this evening.
Westbound traffic on Cameron Road can use Waihi Road or 15th Ave to connect to the motorway, while eastbound traffic will need to travel via Chapel Street.
Takitimu Drive will remain open, but the number of westbound lanes will be reduced so people can expect some delays.
The closure is part of this summer's state highway resurfacing programme, which began around Tauranga this week.
The Transport Agency says drivers are likely to encounter speed restrictions and other traffic management which may cause delays.
It says people should get in the habit of allowing extra time for their journeys.
Road users can get information on road works and detours in the region they are in, or travelling to by checking www.nzta.govt.nz/traffic, by calling 0800 444 449 or following the Transport Agency on Facebook or Twitter.

Tauranga drivers merge? They hate letting a car in front of them.
