Under-16s thrash King Country

A 70-nil victory by the Bay of Plenty Under-16 team against King Country has set up a Northern Region championship decider at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui, next weekend.

As usual, a large band of Under-16 team parents and supporters accompanied the side to Te Kuiti, where the Bay side was always in control posting 70 unanswered points.


The victory cemented their unbeaten record at the top of the Northern Region point's table.

Next Saturday, October 1, they will have the home advantage in the title decider against Waikato in the Western Bay of Plenty.

The Bay of Plenty Under-18 team took on the best of New Zealand's largest city Under-18 players, when the Bay side walked out onto Maramatanga Park at Te Puna, to face Auckland A.

The encounter started at as cracking pace, however some solid defence from the home side, saw Auckland take just a 10-nil lead into the halfway break in play.

In the second spell, the Bay of Plenty teams attacked the visitors line on several occasions, before their opponents ran in two tries to take out the game 24-nil.

The Bay team will round out their Northern Region campaign at Blake Park next Saturday when they meet North Harbour.

A solid win for the Bay of Plenty Roller Mills (primary school) representatives in the curtain raiser at Maramtanga Park, augurs well for the Bay side in their quest for Roller Mills honours in the tournament that kicks off on October 9.

The Bay team wrapped up an unbeaten pre-season campaign with a 53-12 victory against Counties Manukau in their last pre-tournament hit-out.
