Turret Road exit lane open to traffic

The one-way exit lane from 14th Avenue onto Turret Road is open to traffic once more.

A SunLive reader sent in photos showing the concrete barriers blocking access onto Turret Road have been removed.

The barriers were put in place as part of a six-week trial to see what effect closing off the exit lane would have on the flow of traffic in the area.

The concrete barriers replaced lighter water-filled plastic barriers that people had been moving out of the way in defiance of the trial's objectives.

As the trial began on October 16, today's reopening of the exit lane corresponds to the six-week timeframe. A council spokesperson confirmed the trial closure has ended, and that council removed the barriers.

'The data that we've gathered will feed into work that we're doing to improve traffic in the entire block between 11th Ave and 17th Ave.”

Speaking to SunLive before the trial began, TCC transport manager Martin Parkes said the trial would be an information-gathering exercise.

'We've been looking at several options for 15th Avenue and Turret Road. We've got plenty of data about traffic movements in the area, but now we want to find out what impact the closure could have on the transport network in that area.

'We want to know what volume of traffic will do that, compared to those who will use 15th Avenue. The trial will give us a huge amount of data we can then feed into the planning for any future upgrade we do of 15th Avenue.”

Responses to the trial have been mixed, with some drivers commending the council's decision, while others became frustrated with what they believed was worse traffic than before.

Disaster layered upon disaster, its a real talent to think that little test would do or mean anything useful. All about as useful as 90% odd of the puppets ops I mean muppets at city hall. Like the answer is already known, 4-lane the lot from Cameron Road to the new tunnel, no more think required, just do it.

Martin Parkes, how did you get your education in transportation, you need to be sacked you are embarrassing yourself. The writings on the wall man all of 15th ave needs to be doubled, and the bridge as well, both sides of 15th are double (welcome bay round about, top of 15th ave, then down below it goes to a single lane, if it was doubled all the way you would have the bottleneck. You have this advice for free.

They can't toll this road so why would the traffic here be fixed? They need to 4 lane the entire road but lets just do useless 'tests'.

y 4 lane?

Surely 4 laning this would just do what we have seen in other areas like Hewletts Road, it just brings more cars onto the road and then a bottle neck...So we may as well 4 lane Fraser street? then no parks so build more! so stupid we are in thinking more lanes = better... Whats funny is the word peak hour...if we all want to travel in this period expect an hour to travel. This city is hardly congested badly yet, we just need to grow up as drivers.
