Global release of Sing! Sing! Sing!

Watch the video below.

Since the global release of Tauranga's first Sing! Sing! Sing! video, more than 2000 people have watched it on YouTube.

Downtown Tauranga released the video at 7pm on Wednesday, following the successful launch of the event last month.

Project leader, Sally Cooke says Sing! Sing! Sing! is a wonderful collaboration that took us all by surprise given how beautifully it came together.

"The event itself, at Baycourt Theatre, featured New Zealand award winning singer songwriter Ria Hall as our surprise lead singer and the public who joined us as the choir.

"It was pure magic and now we get to share the video from the event with a few extra surprises.”

The 8-minute video features footage of the Sing! Sing! Sing! event at Baycourt on Sunday November 19 and some interview footage with Emily Macklow who partnered with Sally Cooke to bring the event together.

'Tragically Emily's story is one of profound loss, that of her beloved husband Campbell to suicide earlier this year. The charity we aligned with for the Sing! Sing! Sing! event was the Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust and we were delighted to raise over $1000 for them on the day,” says Sally.

The event was a strong community collaboration.

Sally Cooke and Emily Macklow from Downtown Tauranga and Mauao Performing Arts Centre joined forces with The Breeze, Weekend Sun, Baycourt and Bay of Plenty Film to create our first Sing! Sing! Sing!

'We were joined on the day by the incredible singer, songwriter and artist Ria Hall and Award-winning Director Anton Steel who, along with his team, filmed the event.

"The resulting video perfectly captures the emotion and passion that went into the event.”

Emily Macklow, who has been leading the Mauao Contemporary Choir at the Mount for several years now, says Sing! Sing! Sing! gives a wider range of people the opportunity to experience the joy of singing in a group.

Each time we stage Sing! Sing! Sing! we will choose a different well-known song that will bring inspiration.

"For our launch event in November we chose Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah because it's such a beautiful song that we knew would resonate with people.”

The public who attended were asked to pay a charitable donation of $5 (children are free).

Downtown Tauranga covered all event costs allowing all proceeds to go to the Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust.

Sally says the connection between Sing! Sing! Sing! and Life Matters is a good fit.

'11-12 people die every week by suicide in New Zealand. This is such a prevalent and devastating issue in our community.

Sadly, we know that loneliness and a feeling of isolation can be contributing precursors to suicide.

If this event draws people together, gives them a sense of community and uplifts them through the spirit of singing together that will be immense.

And if it draws a stronger light on our need to work harder to support those feeling isolated, alone and depressed then we will feel we have contributed.”

Planning is already underway for the next Sing! Sing! Sing! event in March next year.

'We can't wait for everyone to see it and see the magic that was created that day. We hope they love it as much as we do,” says Sally.
