CBD gas leak stopped

A gas leak that resulted in some CBD streets blocked to traffic, and reversed traffic flows down one way streets, has been stopped.

The gas leak was from an underground gas pipe on the corner of The Strand and Hamilton Street. First Gas has fixed it. The Fire Service and NZ Police have removed the cordons, and Tauranga City Council has restored vehicle access to The Strand, Wharf Street and Hamilton Street.

Central city traffic was disrupted over several hours from about 10am as emergency services first located and then dealt with the leak.

At first Harington Street was closed to traffic and Vehicles from Dive Crescent routed up McLean Street to Willow Street. Harington Street was re-opened as the search zeroed in on Hamilton Street.

Traffic along The Strand was stopped and traffic diverted up Wharf Street where it was re-directed by a pointsman at Willow Street.
