Magic girls named in Commonwealth squad

Two Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic players have been selected as part of the New Zealand Netball team to compete at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Samantha Sinclair and Kelly Jury have been named by the New Zealand Olympic Committee in conjunction with Netball New Zealand.

New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO Kereyn Smith says that she was delighted to welcome the players to the team for Gold Coast 2018.

'Netball is one of the highlights of the Commonwealth Games and we know New Zealanders will be right behind the players named."

WBOP MAGIC Head Coach, Margaret Forsyth says they are very excited about Sam and Kelly's inclusion in the Silver Ferns Commonweath Games squad.

She says both have grown so much as international netballers and we know that they will continue to play with great skill, tenacity and pride.

'Sam's energy and grit in the midcourt and Kelly's presence at goalkeeper compliment the skills of our world ranked national team. We at Magic wish them and the SFs a successful CG campaign."

The team's immediate focus will be three training camps in the build-up to the series against Jamaica, Malawi and Fiji for the Taini Jamison Trophy in Auckland from March 21-24.

Netball Waikato Bay of Plenty CEO, Rohan West says they are absolutely delighted for Sam and Kelly. It's always an incredible honour to represent your country, but there's something special about the Commonwealth Games for netballers.

'This is terrific recognition for both athletes, as they have made significant progress over the past 12 months. I'm sure everyone across the Waikato Bay of Plenty Zone and Magic supporters will join us in wishing them and the whole Silver Ferns squad the best of luck in the Gold Coast."

The naming takes the total number of athletes selected to the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team to 111.
