New Zealand Transport Agency are warning motorists in the Bay of Plenty to drive with caution, as heavy rain in the region has resulted in an increase of potholes and slips on roads.

NZTA Transport System Manager Rob Campbell says several potholes have been reported on the state highway network across the Bay of Plenty.

'Potholes form when water gets into cracks in the road. Vehicles drive over the cracks moving the water around and putting it under pressure.

'This movement and pressure opens up the cracks which eventually form potholes. They are more common on roads where there is more traffic, particularly trucks.

'When we are made aware of potholes we fill them as soon as possible. A temporary fill is usually carried out first and a more permanent repair is scheduled for drier, warmer weather conditions. Pothole repairs just do not work if they are carried out in wet weather.

'We understand the frustration that these incidents cause for motorists and we urge people to get in touch with us as soon possible if they spot potholes or other problems.

'While we have our own inspectors looking for early signs of potholes they can't be everywhere. So we encourage people who see potholes to call us on 0800 44 44 49 so they can be fixed.”

Flooding and slips have also forced the closure of part of the Waioeka Gorge between Opotiki and Gisborne.

The road is closed from the mouth of the gorge to Traffords Hill.

Road users are advised to use State Highway 35 or State Highway 5 if they have to travel.

The slips are being assessed and updates will be provided on social media and the NZTA website.
