Police are investigating the cause of a crash where a car has smashed into a fence.

The crash happened on Takitimu Drive, near the Waihi Road on-ramp.

A police media spokesperson says the crash happened at about 1.30pm.

"Police received reports of a car hitting a fence on Takitimu Drive, the vehicle and people in it reportedly left the scene.

"Police continue to make inquiries to locate those involved."

A reporter at the scene says police are interviewing witnesses to try and find out what happened.

"A witness told me that a car has spun out, slid backwards and slammed into a fence.

"You can tell it slid by the marks in the grass.

"The witness says all the occupants from the car fled from the scene when it crashed."
