Cup victories for BOP teams

Carl Schwarz smashed an amazing 34 runs off the last over of the Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui last over, as they declared at 277/2 in the BOP Cup Baywide game against Te Puke at Blake Park.


Batting first, the home side took to the Te Puke bowling from the outset. Schwarz who was on just 43 entering the last Mount Maunganui over – blazed away to smash four consecutive sixes, a four, then finished his time at the crease with a final gigantic six to end with 34 runs from six balls.

Bay of Plenty representative Peter Drysdale led the way for the Mount with an undefeated 87, with Mark Divehall (67) and Tim Clarke (36) also in good touch.

While Te Puke made a good start with Steven Crossan (35) and Tai Bridgeman-Raison (32) getting starts, the Mount bowlers grabbed the ascendancy. Jason Donnelly, returned his teams best bowling figures taking four wickets for just 6 runs, with Dale Swan also grabbing four wickets.

Tauranga Boys College joined Mount Maunganui, as the only teams to post two victories in the first two rounds of the BOP Cup, when they posted a solid win over East Bay United in Whakatane.

The Tauranga students set the Eastern Bay representatives a good-sized target posting 221/9. Tauranga Boys mentor Mark Orchard led the way with 72, while Elliot Timoti recorded a half-century. Tom Clout posted the first six wicket bag of the Premier competition season, when he took 6/20 as East Bay United were dismissed for 103.

The other two BOP Cup games didn't produce a result because of wet weather. Rotorua Boys High School posted 196 against BOP Indians, with rain finally halting play when the Indians were 37/2, - while the Eves Realty Greerton verses Element IMF Cadets encounter lasted just two overs, before rain stopped play for the day.
