School pride was on the line at the annual Top Schools competition at Gate Pa School last night, with Selwyn Ridge Primary School taking out the title for the fourth year in a row.

Twenty-one primary schools competed in the annual event from as far afield as Katikati Primary School and Allandale School in Whakatane.

The popular community event was started by Gate Pa School principal Richard Inder in 2001 and is based on the New Zealand game show series Top Town that screened on television between 1976 and 1990.

The obstacle challenges include Horizontal Bungy, Leaky Bucket, Lydia Ko, Magic Carpet, Big Foot, Railway Track and Thread the Needle.

Schools competed in teams of 12 Year 5 and 6 students with some schools also bringing along cheerleading squads.

Richard says the twilight event is a great way to both showcase Gate Pa School to the community and for students to compete against others in a fun environment.
