Dramatic finishes in rep rugby

There have been few more dramatic finishes in the annual Roller Mills rugby tournament grand finals than the Bay of Plenty victory on Saturday.

With the Bay trailing by two points with the clock showing full time, no one could have imagined the drama that would take place when Eru Hohepa stepped up to attempt a penalty goal.


While the ball fell a few metres short, a concerted Bay charge on the line resulted in Connor Gordon scooping up the ball to cross for a try.

The successful conversion from Eru Hohepa gave the Bay of Plenty primary school representative team a come from behind 20-15 victory.

Bay of Plenty Coach Cliff Honey said the team's performance was excellent.

'The Bay of Plenty boys really stepped up in the final, and carried out to perfection our game plan to defeat Auckland East.

'We were actually more nervous on the Friday in the semi-final against North Harbour, than the title decider.

'The team applied real pressure with a good attacking game, and superb defence.”

Team management singled out Jacob Norris for his superb defensive play throughout the tournament.

The victory over the defending champions was especially sweet, as Auckland East had defeated the Bay team 39-13 on day three of the tournament played in Thames.

The Bay of Plenty representatives entered the final with real emotion and passion, with the call from the pre-game team talk being 'bring it home”.

The Bay of Plenty team was rewarded for their efforts with six team members selected for the tournament team.

Eru Hohepa, Keb Vaetao, Carlos Price, Connor Gordon, Hayze Perham and Kini Ormsby were selected for the tournament team, with Bay of Plenty management believing that a couple of other youngsters were unlucky not to e recognized with tournament honours.

In addition to the Roller Mills Shield, the Bay of Plenty team was presented with the Carson Cup, which is awarded to the team in the A section displaying the best sportsmanship and behaviour on and off the field.

In what was a busy week of age group rugby, the Bay of Plenty under-14 and 15 teams faced their Waikato counterparts at Greerton Park on Sunday (16 October 2011).

The Bay of Plenty Under-14s performed with real flair, considering the limited time together entering the match.

After conceding an early Waikato try, the home side rallied and stuck to their game plan to grab the lead.

However a late Waikato touchdown resulted in the visitors taking home a narrow 27-22 victory.

Captain Kaine Lewis led his troops from the front running in two tries.

Team management singled out the performances of Corban Selwyn as the last line of defence in the backline, with forwards James Mikaiaere, Jessie Williams and Grayson Kite, all having good games.

The Bay Under-15 team also played with pride and passion. Damian Darling scored a try with Rikihana Borell kicking two penalties for the Bay side, as they went down 22-11 to their Waikato counterparts.
