Driver blows five times legal limit

Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter says a woman driving in Bellevue on Sunday had a breath alcohol level of 1240 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. Photo Supplied.

A driver who crashed into a parked car in Tauranga overnight was nearly five times the legal alcohol limit, says police.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Bellevue Road around 6.30pm.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Hunter says the 34-year-old woman driver blew 1240 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath when police breath tested her at the scene.

The legal adult limit is 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Wayne says most people would not be able to walk, let alone drive with that level of blood alcohol.

He says no one was injured in the crash.

Crush the rest of his car and ban him from driving for life if the police is serious in bringing the road toll down.

It is good to see the general consensus here. The only way we can prevent this really selfish and thoughtless behaviour, is by making it seriously socially unacceptable. People who drink and drive are idiots, not heroes. Maybe 2 years loss of licence for every multiple over the limit? (That would be 4 years at twice the limit and 10 years in this case.) I hope this lady's friends remind her of the terrible outcomes that could occur with this kind of self-indulgence.

Won't stop them

If these people don't worry about drinking and driving then taking their licence away will not stop them driving either. They'll just carry on!

Crush

This is beyond belief, my solution is to impound the car, then make application to have the car crushed, if this is known to drivers they may think twice about the consequences of driving well over the limit. 500 micrograms over loss of the vehicle immediately .
