Elderly couple facing hefty repair bill

An elderly Papamoa couple have been left with a hefty repair bill after allegedly being cut off by a 4WD.

John Trinder and his wife were driving home on Saturday evening at around 6pm when the incident occurred.

John says they had just come onto Maranui Street, when a four-wheel drive turned right out of Kaimanawa Street and cut them off.

'I gave him a short toot, and he put his brakes on temporarily, before taking off,” says John.

'After that we began picking up speed again, and he slammed his brakes on again, this time stopping dead in the middle of the road. By the time I realised what had happened and put my own brakes on, I had run into the back of him.”

The four-wheel drive had a spare tyre on the back, which severely damaged the bonnet of John's car. It wasn't a write-off, but he says the damage was enough to make it unsafe to drive.

'The engine is alright, but the radiator looks stuffed. It had a few different-coloured oils coming out of it, so I didn't want to drive it and risk stuffing the engine.”

Instead, he called his grandson, who came and arranged for a tow truck to pick the car up. Meanwhile, the driver of vehicle that caused the damage left the scene, before anyone could note down the number plate.

To make matters worse, John says his car insurance lapsed around a month ago, and he hadn't got around to renewing it.

'I've had so much on my plate looking after my wife, taking her to the doctor, and it was the last thing I was thinking about.”

John's daughter Joanne has set up a Givealittle page to try and help her parents with the costs.

'This is the worst case of road rage I have ever heard of, especially cutting an elderly couple off while they were trying to get home,” she says.

She's hoping if anyone knows something, particularly local panel beaters who might have been asked to repair some damage to back of a four-wheel drive recently, to contact police.

Police say they have been made aware of this particular incident, and where avenues of inquiry emerge, they will follow them up.

'We encourage drivers to be considerate of others, responsible and make good choices behind the wheel at all times,” says a police spokesperson.

'Where incidents do occur we encourage motorists to note the details of the vehicle, including registration, and call police at the time, which allows us to follow up appropriate and make relevant inquiries.”

Anger...

... has no place behind the wheel of a car (it is a lethal weapon;respect it as such). If someone's driving makes you angry, let it go and resolve not to be as bad as they are. If you run into the back of someone, you are liable. You are supposed to be able to stop within the distance you are following. It is hard when the person in front deliberately caused the accident, but it is very hard to prove that was the case (especially without witnesses...) The Trinders have my sympathy here but, technically, they are wrong and will have to suck it up....

Dash cam

You gotta watch out who you toot at or give the friendly wave to - you have no idea of who is driving the other car or what they are fuelled up on and unfortunately when a brake check incident happens it is the following driver who gets smacked on the hand: gotta keep that insurance up to date as well. This is when a dash cam would pay for itself...

While it seems pretty obvious that the four wheel driver is one of the 'I don't give a stuff about rules, regs or any other road users' It is also fair to say that you should be able to stop in less that half the distance between you and the vehicle in front - in this case (unless the four wheel driver had deliberately backed into you) I am afraid that the law would see his as being your fault!

Road Rage hothead

There's too much of this attitude among a certain breed of male driver who thinks he is beyond doubt the owner and self righteous possessor of anything whilst driving, who rages when tooted at. This idiot in this case where 2 innocent people are legitimately going about their business can only be described as a yob and a goon probably on P or booze or both. Rest easy John and your good wife and remember every dog has his day.

Feel sorry

There is no doubt in my mind that the 4 wheel deliberately stopped suddenly and caused the collision.there are unfortunately people in this world who dont give a darn who they hurt, but the upside of all this is that person will get his comeuppance, there is and old saying ( It is a long road that has no bends) so sooner than later he will cop it and I hope in a big way.Very sorry for the couple involved and trust this has not put them off driving.

...with the utmost respect, if you were indeed travelling at the required distance to stop safely and clearly did not do so, may I suggest a 'reaction time' test?....as we age (yes, I am up there) it is a good thing to know we are still capable of quick and positive reactions when necessary. As for the (accused) offending driver (who appears to automatically be a 'certain breed of male driver'...without actually knowing), there will always be turkeys out there, how you deal with them is the real sign of maturity. We all do have personal issues to be aware of, but moreso now need to be aware of the increased requirements on our roads. No injuries= good result, I wish you and your wife well.....
