Body discovered at Port of Tauranga

UPDATED 7.45AM: Investigations are underway following the discovery of a body at the Port of Tauranga.

"Police have been called to Port of Tauranga's container terminal this morning after the discovery of a body on a train arriving from Auckland," says a Port of Tauranga spokesperson.

"The KiwiRail train was carrying containers from Port of Tauranga's inland port in Auckland, MetroPort.

"The person was found when it arrived at the terminal at Sulphur Point."

Emergency services were called to the port shortly before 7am.

A police spokesperson says a person has died after an incident invovling a train near Port of Tauranga.

Worksafe has been notified of the accident.

EARLIER 7.17AM:

Police are investigating reports of a workplace accident at the Port of Tauranga.

Emergency services, including St John Paramedics and firefighters, were called to the port shortly before 7am.

A police spokesperson confirmed to SunLive that there had been an accident but says there are no other details are available at this stage.
