A Katikati man has been named as the hunter who was fatally shot in the Kaimai-Mamaku Forest on Monday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Stephen Ambler says Gordon Douglas Leech was hunting alone in the bush when the fatal incident happened.
"The 57-year-old was hunting alone when he encountered another hunting party and was shot in the chest."
Stephen says police are continuing their enquiries into the matter.
Gordon's body was removed from the forest yesterday afternoon following a scene examination.
Gordon, also known as Cookie to his family and friends, will be farewalled at a service at the Katikati RSA on Henry Road on April 7 at 12pm.
