Greerton beaten in low scoring game

Inclement weather and a default conspired to see just two games that produced results in the Baywide BOP Cup Premier matches at the weekend.

At Pemberton Park in Tauranga, home side Greerton batted first against defending BOP Cup titleholders Mount Maunganui.

In a game where the bowlers from both teams took control of the proceedings – Greerton was dismissed for 100.

The Mount bowlers immediately went on the attack and had the home side in desperate trouble at five down with just 17 runs on the board.

It was left to Bay representative all rounder Brett Hampton to give his side some respectability with a gritty 32 runs.

Just when Greerton appeared to be getting back in the encounter, Mount skipper Daniel Hill ripped through the tail to finish with four wickets at a cost of just six runs.

However, the Greerton bowlers made Mount Maunganui work hard for victory, grabbing five wickets, before the visitors finally posted the win points.

Mark Divehall top scored at the top of the innings with 22, with Campbell Thomas the best of the Greerton bowling attack returning figures of 2/30.

Te Puke put their first points on the board this season, when they defeated BOP Indians at Boord Park in Rotorua.

Dutch Academy player Joost Kroejen, who is spending the summer in the Western Bay of Plenty, top scored in his side's total of 173 all out.

Bay rep Mitch McCann also got a good start posting 36 runs.

In a game that was competitive throughout, the Rotorua team fell 14 runs short of victory when they were removed for 159 – to hand Te Puke their first victory of the season.

Whilst the game in the Eastern Bay of Plenty didn't produce a result when rain finally halted play – East Bay United gained valuable batting practice at Trident High School. Former Bay representative James Mitchell, made a grand return to form smashing 95 in his team's total of 232/9 declared, in the 110 over match.

While Rotorua Central lasted 14 over in misty rain, they pulled the pin at 74/2 when the precipitation showed no signs of abating.
