Papamoa are through to the next round of the Chatham Cup after a convincing 6-0 win over Tuakau at Gordon Spratt Reserve.
In stark contrast to last weekend's battling goalless draw at Otumoetai, the home side rediscovered their ruthless streak in front of goal, scoring twice in the opening period before sealing the win with four more after the break.
Both sets of players marked Anzac Day with a minute's silence before the game got underway in sunny conditions and in front of another healthy Bay of Plenty crowd.
Papamoa coach Duncan Lowry named an unchanged starting XI, and his preferred 3-4-3 formation paid dividends, with man of the match Andrew Cooper, Strauss Boom, Mitchell Hales, Alex Wilson and Top Khamwanthong all making an appearance on the scoresheet, alongside a Tuakau own goal.
Despite the convincing end result, Papamoa keeper Ryan Foord had his busiest game of the season so far, and did well to keep a clean sheet.
'It's always nice when a team comes here and plays attacking football,” says Lowry, 'and all credit to Tuakau for competing for the full 90 minutes.
'For the first 15 minutes we were in a tough game, playing a team that had come to win. Even going in at half-time 2-0 up, the game was still wide open.”
As they had been in their previous fixture at Otumoetai, Papamoa's back three were composed throughout, with James Davies producing another sterling performance alongside skipper Campbell Higgins and Phillip Fletcher.
'The referee allowed the game to flow,” added Lowry, 'and that was appreciated by both teams. The game was played in very good spirits.
'We continue to grow in confidence and we're becoming a cohesive unit.”
Next up for Papamoa is an away trip to Matamata Swifts on Saturday, May 5.
