With more than 97 per cent of returned votes counted, it looks like John Robson will return to council.
The former councillor did not make it back in during the 2016 election, but appears to have convinced voters to give him a second chance in the 2018 by-election.
Of the current voter return of 26,450 votes (27.68 per cent), John has 4944 votes.
His closest competitor is Mark Wassung, sitting on 4139 votes.
Electoral officer Warwick Lampp says special votes and those received this morning still need to be counted, with that number amounting to around a thousand votes.
"However, I don't expect the results to change much."
Preliminary results, and possibly the final result, will be officially published on the Tauranga City Council website tomorrow.

Have obviously sorted out the has-beens and wanna-bees names like Bill, Buddy, Tony and others failed to make any meaningful showing. How appropriate it is, the track records are clear and fall well short of any minimum expectation.

Good to see a sensible, practical and fiscally prudent figure elected. Let's stop wasting money on a self serving few. We're expecting results John.
