Teams taking guard for nationals

It's a big day out for four Tauranga schools cricket teams today as they endeavour to move closer to berths in their respective national tournaments.

Tauranga Boys' College, which has become a powerhouse in New Zealand secondary school cricket in the last few years is chasing a place at the Gillette Cup national finals.

The Western Bay school is hosting St Peter's from Cambridge in a Northern Districts (ND) semi-final.

The Waikato school, which like its Tauranga Boys' counterpart has a definitive cricket pathway in place and is likely to provide a stern challenge at Nicholson Field.

A Tauranga Girls' College team will take part in head-to-head competition in the ND NZCT Secondary Schoolgirls Finals to be played at Steele Park in the heart of Hamilton East.

Four teams will battle for the right to become ND champions and further progress toward the national finals.

The winners of the morning two Twenty20 encounters will play off in the afternoon to find the 2011 ND titleholder.

Tauranga Intermediate has a team apiece in the New Zealand (formerly Milo) Cup and Shield ND finals.

In a similar format to the NZCT competition on the same day, four teams apiece will battle for ND honours.
