A 54-year-old man has been arrested following an incident involving a stolen 10-tonne truck in Te Aroha overnight.

Shortly before midnight on Saturday a truck was reported stolen from a Te Aroha address.

At around this time a vehicle also crashed into the front doors of the Morrinsville Police Station causing extensive damage to the front of the building, before fleeing the scene.

Police cannot say at this stage whether it was the stolen truck, as the matter is currently under investigation.

However, the stolen truck was located shortly after on State Highway 26 heading towards Te Aroha.

Police attempted to stop the truck, but the driver failed to stop and allegedly drove towards two police cars.

The truck was then observed driving around Te Aroha where it again allegedly drove at police units.

Multiple cordons were put in place in Te Aroha and the Eagle helicopter was deployed, as well as road spikes.

After a time police fired two shots at the front tyre of the truck and it came to a stop. The driver of the truck was then arrested, and a 54-year-old man is now in police custody.

Inspector Jeff Penno says it was a quickly evolving situation which was resolved without injury.

'Police staff involved demonstrated courage and initiative.”

An investigation is underway and charges are likely, he says.
