A motorcyclist is in critical condition in Tauranga Hospital after a crash in Waihi.

Emergency services were called to the crash on Sunday at 3.50pm.

Waikato Police District Command Centre Senior Sergeant Mike Henwood says the motorcycle and a Toyota motor vehicle crashed on Waihi Beach Road.

"The man sustained multiple injuries, including injuries to his arm and shoulders," says a spokesperson for the Tauranga-based Trustpower TECT Rescue Helicopter.

"He was stablised by paramedics at the scene before being flown to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition."

The road was closed for some time while a scene examination was carried out.

The Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
