Cricket’s battle of the bridge on

The clash of the two heavyweights in Baywide premier cricket takes place this weekend when Element IMF Cadets square off against Platinum Pacific Reclad Mount Maunganui in a BOP Cup encounter.

While both Western Bay sides have yet to taste defeat this season, they sit in different positions on the points ladder.

Defending BOP Cup champions Mount Maunganui have made the early running in defence of their title, comfortably defeating Rotorua Boys' High, Te Puke and Eves Realty Greerton in their first three games of the season.

A bye and a rained out match have conspired to see Cadets sit in fourth place on the points ladder.

In their only game of the new season they had little trouble with Te Puke. After dismissing Te Puke for 126, they cruised to victory for the loss of just three wickets.

This weekend's match-up at the Tauranga Domain will be a battle of early season bragging rights between the archrivals with one of the participants losing their unbeaten season record.

Tauranga Boys' College has also made a perfect start to the new cricket year with three victories, albeit one by default.

The Tauranga students, who will be backing up after a Gillette Cup game midweek, will host Te Puke at Nicholson Field.

Te Puke posted their first win of the season last weekend defeating BOP Indians.

A Rotorua local derby will take centre stage at Rotorua Boys' High School ground with Rotorua Boys' at home to iTCo Central.

There will be plenty at stake with the victor posting their first win points of the season.

BOP Indians, who sit in fifth place on the points ladder, are a good example of a team which has taken advantage of the bonus points on offer in the 110 over competition.

This weekend they will be out to cement their mid table position when they face Greerton at Boord Park in Rotorua.
