Strike bowlers return to Bay side

Experience and the return of two strike bowlers are the features of the Bay of Plenty cricket team selected to play in the Northern Districts one-day tournament.

The annual tournament, which opens the Fergus Hickey campaign of the six Northern Districts minor association representative sides, is to be played at Owen Delaney Park in Taupo, November 13-15.

Jono Boult, 38, who captains the side, and vice-captain Ben Williams, 45, lead the statistics in Bay of Plenty appearances.

Both players will bolster the experience of the side, after Jono played a cameo role because of Northern Knight commitments last season, while Ben returns after a season with Northland last year.

The strike bowling ranks have been bolstered with the return of Andrew Hoogstraten and Amandeep Singh.

Andrew, who has previously played 21 games in the Bay of Plenty uniform, has recently returned from playing cricket in Holland.

He was considered unlucky not to be selected in the Dutch team that competed in the last ICC World Cup.

Few Bay of Plenty players have made such an entrance into the senior representative ranks, as Amandeep Singh.

Selected for the BOP against Counties Manukau in the 2005-2006 season, the quick bowler made a spectacular debut, taking a hat trick as he posted figures of 5/32.

Another to set a Bay of Plenty record is Bay of Plenty batsman Bharat Popli.

In just 17 games for the Bay, he has posted four centuries, which equals the all time record set by Richard Shrimpton and Mike Wright.

The prolific run scorer has amassed 672 runs in just three seasons, with a highest score of 122 not out.
