Rotorua Boys’ win Bay sevens comp

Rotorua Boys' High School will represent the Bay of Plenty in the BNZ Condor National Secondary School Rugby Sevens after winning the under-19 title at the inaugural BOPRU Secondary School Rugby Sevens played at Western Heights High School at the weekend.


The under-19 division, where the winner won a berth at the Condor Sevens to be played in Auckland on December 4, was spilt into two divisions of pool play.

The top two from each section advanced to the championship semi-finals, with the third and fourth moving into the plate competition.

Tauranga Boys' College won a tight contest against Opotiki College that was up for grabs throughout taking out the semi-final 19-12, with Rotorua Boys' shutting out local rivals Western Heights High School 2-nil.

The entree to the championship final was provided by the Plate final stanza.Led by strong runs from Te Puke High School player Dan Hollinshead, the Te Puke team defeated Bethlehem College 21-14.

Another battle between the heavyweights of Bay of Plenty secondary school rugby took place in the championship final with Rotorua Boys' squaring off against Tauranga Boys' College. The Rotorua team raced out to a 17-nil lead.

In spite of impressive performances from Tauranga Boys Te Ahie Toma and Paul Forrest in the second spell, the Rotorua School held on to take out the title 24-17.

Rotorua Boys' will now represent the Bay of Plenty at the Condor National Sevens against the best school sevens teams from throughout the country.

The under-15 division was also taken out by Rotorua Boys' High School, which defeated Mount Maunganui College in the final.

Taupo Nui A Tia College finished in third position with Te Puke High finishing in fourth place.

Tournament organisers were lavish in their praise of the outstanding support provided by the host, Western Heights High School, to make the day an awesome experience of all participating teams.
