Historical artefacts discovered at the Harington Street Transport Hub construction site are the reason behind a temporary halt on works.

Tauranga City Council communication advisor Marcel Currin says the items were discovered on Thursday.

'A historical rubbish pit was found on site where the new Harington Street parking building and bicycle hub is being constructed.

'The site contains European artefacts going back to the late 1800s. A team has been working this morning to draw, excavate and bag up the artefacts for appropriate analysis of the site.

'Work is continuing on the site as planned.”

Marcel says more information on the artefacts will be available at a later date.

Construction began at the Transport Hub site at the end of June.

The new seven-storey hub is estimated to cost about $27.14m and will bring 250 bike parks, 550 car parks and 53 motorbike parks to the site in Harington Street.

I hope they examine my rubbish when they find it in 100 years!

The landfill from Auckland near Te Aroha will be a paradise for archeologists in 100 years. They will scratch their heads why there is so much plastic in it.

Interesting

Might be a bit more interesting than shells and pieces of pounamu.
