Paedophile claims: no victims identified

Awanui Black died in 2016.

Police are yet to identify any victims following claims of paedophilia against a former Bay of Plenty Regional Councillor.

Awanui Black's widow Anihera posted a video on Facebook at the weekend were she alleged Black was a paedophile. Read more here.

Since posting the video to Facebook, a lot of people have come out in support of Anihera - including a local Tauranga artist removing a mural of Black, and a Labour MP publicly commending Anihera.

Police are also looking into the claims and Detective Inspector Mark Loper says officers are continuing to seek further information after speaking to Anihera.

'Based on the information available to us at this time, no victims have come forward to Police and no victims have been identified.

'All allegations are taken seriously and we are committed to building a relationship of trust to receive the information Police need to progress this matter.”

Mark says they remain keen to hear from anyone who has been affected.

'Police are continuing to gather further information, a process that takes time.

'We welcome contact from anyone who wishes to share information with us about the allegations.

'We have compassionate staff who will listen very carefully to what victims have to say.”

People can do this by contacting their local Police station or by emailing the Adult Sexual Assault team on ASA@police.govt.nz.

Any information which is given to us will be carefully assessed by specialist staff, who can also ensure the right support services are available.
