Coloured containers in Tauranga CBD

The containers on the corner of Hamilton and Willow streets.

Brightly coloured containers are on site down on the corner of Hamilton and Willow streets, as Tauranga City Council moves into the final stages of set up for ‘Our Place'.

‘Our Place', managed by Little Big Markets, is an exciting new pop-up space in the central city for everyone to visit and enjoy.

The Council owned land has been leased to Little Big Events, to help support the transformation of the city centre, bringing more people to the city to work and play.

‘Our Place' provides space for local businesses, offering affordable rents to social enterprises and start-ups, with event spaces and public areas available for hire for the community.

'We are looking forward to seeing this space in action, and watching it growing to support the momentum of the Heart of the City,” says Jaine Lovell-Gadd, General Manager, City Transformation.

Little Big Events have some options available for businesses interested in being a part of the Our Place community – email chris@ourplacetauranga.co.nz

The facts are

The Council is charging a nominal rental of $1.00 (one dollar) a year, no rates and have spent $260,000.00 (two hundred and sixty thousand dollars) on the concrete floor of the now demolished Council offices in Willow Street to accommodate The Big Little Markets who will on charge their tenants many thousands of dollars for the privileged of being there. This is an outright Council ratepayer subsidy . This money would be far better spent on subsidized parking but no they go and put the parking charges up. There are no upsides to this operation because as everybody apart from Council knows that because of poor planning there is a desperate shortage of car parks in the CBD which this operation if successful will only put added pressure on to this over stretched resource. No matter which way you look at it this additional competition is unwarranted and unnecessary.

Another 'kick in the teeth' for those poor retailers who are still hanging in there in the CBD. By one means or another the council seem determined to close down the CBD to the general public. Do they really think that shoppers will crowd in to shop at the Big Little Markets? Where will they park? I guess the container vendors will be charged exorbitant rent - if indeed any are brave enough to give it a go. Perhaps they could open 3pm - 7pm. Free parking and somewhere to go in those summer, daylight hours ? Might work.
