Street in Tauranga CBD to close for a year

A section of Hamilton Street, pictured above, will be closed for 12 months starting tomorrow.

A section of Hamilton Street, between Durham Street and Willow Street in the Tauranga Central Business District, will be closed from Thursday - for a year.

Access to the Tauranga Library, Kingsview Resort, Harrington House and Citizens Advice Bureau car parks will be maintained, says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

"The closure will be in place for about 12 months while the new Harington Street parking building and bike hub is being constructed.

"A section of Harington Street between Durham Street and Willow Street was closed on 19 June and will remain closed for the duration of the construction project."

Why not just close off the whole CBD as it is getting close to that now. Unbelievable amount of cones, road closures, one way traffic, parks with cones in. It would be simpler to close the whole city as it is getting close to that now.

Congratulations TCC

If you had planned to kill off the CBD all these road closures will certainly do it. Between these two streets and the Spring Street/Durham Street &The Strand, plus when the Farmers demolition starts you might as well close the CBD down It's like an obstacle course negotiating the closed roads at present heaven help us in a few months especially with summer visitors and cruise ship traffic. It will mean more people going to the likes of Bayfair, Papamoa and Tauriko. Total grid lock over the holidays everyday is looking possible Hooray!!!

This is crazy

We will have Harington, Hamilton, Durham, Spring and the Strand closed all at the same time. How do we access the City from the north? Almost impossible. If they have to close two streets to build a car parking building what will happen in Devonport Road, Elizabeth Street and The Strand Extension when they start work on the old Farmers building, the old Westpac building and the new apartments in Devonport Road plus various other work in the same street ? Will we see 1st Avenue, Devonport Road and Elizabeth Street closed for the new Farmers building? Will The Strand Extension and Devonport Road be closed for the work on the old Westpac building? Will we see the same street closures when the Council start their projects plus their planned new hotel all in Willow and Durham Streets ? Bureaucracy has gone mad and Council loves it.

Interesting !!

While not a resident of Tauranga, I own much property in the city and I am "in town" every two weeks for 4/5 days. AND while I try to support the CBD retailers, it now looks like the CBD is about to become a NO GO area for shoppers!! I'm very sorry for the CBD retailers AND I can now see why there are so many EMPTY shops/buildings in the CBD. AND I am also VERY sorry for the landlords. Luckley, I don't don't have any properties in the CDB.
