In today's forecast we are expecting occasional rain, easing overnight, with light winds.

High tide is at 11.30am and low tide is at 5.40pm. There's a sea swell of .7m with a sea temperature of 16 degrees. Sunset tonight is at 5.14pm.

If you're going fishing the next best fish bite time is between 5 and 7pm.

In NZ history on this day in 1982 the Privy Council ruled on Samoan citizenship. The Privy Council granted New Zealand citizenship to Western Samoans born since 1924, but the government did not accept this decision.

In world history on this day in 1545 King Henry VIII of England watched his flagship, Mary Rose, capsize as it left to battle the French. In 1799 the Rosetta Stone, a tablet with hieroglyphic translations into Greek, was found in Egypt. In 1870 France declared war on Prussia. In 1975 Apollo and Soyuz spacecrafts docked in orbit.

Today is the birthday of Samuel Colt. A gun maker and inventor of the first practical revolver, he was born in 1814. It's also the birthday of French impressionist painter, Edgar Degas, born in 1834. And it's also the birthday of Russian poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. Born in 1893, he once wrote "Love for us is no paradise of arbors - to us love tells us, humming, that the stalled motor of the heart has started to work again.”
