Mount toilet fire suspected arson

Firefighters were called to the fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police are working on flushing out any suspects as they investigate a suspected arson at a Mount Maunganui toilet block.

Firefighters had to use a high pressure hose to extinguish a toilet set fire in Mount Maunganui.

The blaze sparked a lengthy callout to the public toilet block on the corner of Pacific Avenue and Marine Parade, next to Mt Drury, at 12.37am on Sunday.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Colin Underdown says while the fire was easily put out, the attending firefighters stayed at the scene for an hour and 40 minutes while police investigated the suspected arson.

Anyone with information about the fire can contact their nearest police station.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

A sign on the toilet says it is out of action.
