History has been made for Whakatane Roller Derby's Brawl Stars who have secured a win against Auckland Roller Derby's Bolts, over the weekend.

Auckland, who are currently ranked third in New Zealand Roller Derby, came out swinging from the beginning during the NZ Roller Derby Top 10 Tournament match up on Saturday.

Whakatane, ranked seven places below the team, was pegged to walk away with an obvious loss however the tables turned very quickly and within the first five minutes it was clear the home team was not prepared to let up easily.

The game was neck and neck, with the score tied for a majority of it, until half time where Whakatane held lead.

The extremely physical fight continued into the second half with more than a few lead changes moving into the final minutes.

It was penalties from an Auckland jammer that gave WRDL the opportunity they needed to run away with the end of the game, and secure a win, with 209 to ARDL's 181.

WRDL spokesperson Dylan Henderson says the game is one of the best the team has ever played.

'This was a peak performance from our league; our team work and cooperation was at its best, our incredible coaches made strategic decisions that enabled talented skaters to do what they do best and we're all very proud of each other”.

Whakatane next head south to take on Dunedin before competing in the NZ Top Ten finals held in Christchurch in October.
