Professor Maryanne Garry is a professor at Waikato University and is bringing her knowledge to Tauranga.
Most people think memory is a faithful recorder and archiver of experience. But memory is a liar, a con artist, and a self-serving autobiographer. Memory causes trouble for us, and for others. Yet without memory, we couldn't function, and our institutions would collapse, according to Maryanne.
Speaking at Trinity Wharf in Tauranga, Maryanne will present some of the science of memory and talk about when and how memory causes trouble.
'I'm doing the talk as a service to the community, and was invited to do it. It's about the surprising scientific research, some of it mine, on the foibles of human memory,” says Professor Maryanne Garry.
Prof Garry received her PhD in 1993 from the University of Connecticut, and did postdoctoral work at the University of Washington.
In 1996 she moved to Victoria University of Wellington, where she worked for 20 years before taking up a joint appointment in 2016 at the University of Waikato, as a Professor of Psychology and a Professor in the New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science at The University of Waikato.
The free lecture is taking place on Monday, 6 August from 6pm till 7pm at Trinity Wharf.

The great thing is when you learn that memories, especially the bad one can be erased. The youtube videos by Richard Bandler teach you in a few minutes how to rid yourself of unwanted memories.. Most of which are Ego driven and modified.. Some memories are lovely and need to be cherished, others can be erased.. It changed my life.. Yay..
