Bay of Plenty residents will get to enjoy fine weather for the second weekend in a row, with a fine end expected to the week.

MetService meteorologist Tui McInnes says the fine weekend is forecast for the whole of Bay of Plenty.

'Tauranga and Whakatane can expect maximum temperatures in the mid-teens and there could be some cold weather, but only in the mornings where winds are lighter and the skies will be clearer which allows for some cooler temperatures.”

He says while the sky may be looking slightly grey today, this is expected to pass by this afternoon.

'While you may have seen some reports about lightning strikes and thunderstorms, and those systems are still continuing, the main thing is as these pass over the country the land is cold so the storm system loses a bit of its energy source because of this.

'Bay of Plenty therefore, being on the eastern side of the country, benefits from being sheltered by the land a bit and so when this system hits the region it's died off quite a bit.

'The wet weather the region may be seeing today actually is that front that's spreading from the thunderstorm and it's moving away from this afternoon into a nice day tomorrow.”
