Body recovered from Castle Rock in the Coromandel

Castle Rock also known as Motutere.

Police are investigating the death of a person whose body has been recovered at Castle Rock in the Coromandel.

Emergency services were called to Castle Rock just before 11.30am on Sunday.

Kuaotunu Land SAR members responded to the callout to assist police recover a body from Motutere (Castle Rock), says a post on the Kuaotunu Land Search and Rescue Facebook Page.

'Coromandel Fire Rescue, St Johns Ambulance and the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter were also in attendance.”

Police couldn't elaborate on the nature of the incident but in statement said the death was being treated as unexplained.

"Inquiries are ongoing to understand the circumstances of the death."

Castle Rock is a 525-metre-high mountain, southeast of Coromandel township.

The site is popular with rock climbers and day walkers.
