TVNZ broadcaster Greg Boyed, 48, has died suddenly in Switzerland while travelling with his wife and youngest child.

Boyed had worked as a newsreader and reporter for TVNZ for 25 years.

In 1991, he worked as the chief reporter and newsreader at a radio station in Tauranga. He worked for IRN for four years - his first as the news and sport reporter and reader in Wellington, and the rest as sports sub and reader in Auckland.

A statement released by his family says he died on Monday.

"He was absolutely loved and adored. A treasured son, brother, husband and father, he will be deeply missed.

"Greg was a talented journalist, presenter, musician and an exceptional friend to those lucky enough to know him."

His family say he had been battling depression.

"Greg was the kindest and most caring man, a devoted father who cherished and loved his two children. We are all struggling to comes to terms with this."

Boyed was a regular sight on New Zealand television screens, working on One News, Seven Sharp, Fair Go, Q + A, Close Up and Target.

In recent years he has hosted One News' late night Tonight bulletin.

TVNZ head of news and current affairs John Gillespie says in a statement the news had come as a huge shock to Boyed's TVNZ family.

"He was a wonderful man and a talented broadcaster who strongly believed in the power and importance of journalism in people's lives. Greg was known for his wit and warmth and kindness. It's a very personal loss for us.

"It's a lot to take in. Greg will be greatly missed by us, he will be missed by our colleagues in the wider industry and he'll be missed by our viewers."
