Entries for the Yates New Zealand's Budding Young Gardener competition for 2018 are open.

A national search is on for young kiwi gardeners, aged 5 – 15 years old, who love getting in the garden.

Judge and gardening guru Ruud Kleinpaste says getting our kids into the garden is the best thing we can do for them and for the planet.

'The next generation of New Zealanders is becoming more and more disconnected from nature as digital devices demand more time and ‘eye-balls', rather than getting outside and into nature.

'Yates Budding Young Gardener aims to celebrate a love of gardening and encourage children of all levels of capability to further develop their passion. Whether children are just starting out or have been gardening for a few years and know how to sow seed, rustle up a few radishes and turn lemons into lemonade – we want to hear from them all,” says Ruud.

Seven regional winners will be selected by the judges and they will win a massive Yates Budding Young Gardener Hamper valued at over $300.

They will also go through to the final with the grand winner being chosen through a public voting system.

One lucky winner will become a Yates ambassador for one year and will win an amazing family trip to Queensland, Australia.

The prize includes flights, accommodation and a rental car plus a three day pass to the Gold Coast theme parks including Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World and Wet ‘n' Wild.

The grand prize also includes spending a day in your garden with a Yate horticulturist picking up some great skills and tips.

Keen gardeners aged 5 to 15 years old can enter the competition here and complete the entry form. They will also need to upload a short video about themselves and their garden.

Entries close September 17 2018.
