Reminder to pay attention while driving

An elderly women has been seriously injured after being run over on a footpath.

A member of the public wants to remind drivers to double check their rearview mirrors when backing out of a driveway.

This comes after an elderly lady was run over on the footpath on Doncaster Drive, Papamoa, on the morning of Saturday August 18.

The women was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The man, who didn't want his name to be used in this article, says she is still in the ICU.

'The police have informed me that she is still in the ICU. I wanted to take flowers up for her, but I understand you can't in the ICU.

'I understand she has broken legs, ribs and other internal injuries and her face was a bit of a mess.”

CCTV footage supplied by Argyle Security shows the lady walking down Doncaster Drive when a car backed out of a driveway.

'She looked lifeless. The video footage was horrific, even police couldn't watch it,” says a staff member of the security company.

The resident on Doncaster Drive is urging people to look in their mirrors before and while they are reversing out of their drive way.

'I think education is key. Maybe start with street signs as a reminder?”

....should tell drivers that if they have to back out of a driveway to do it slowly, and to look for pedestrians. Unfortunately I've had it done to me multiple times while walking my dog and if I hadn't stopped, we would have both been hit. The speed people back out of driveways is ridiculous, combine that with not even looking for pedestrians and accidents like these happen. What really annoys me is we have a lot of elderly in my area who use mobility scooters who wouldn't stand a chance if one of these lazy drivers hit them. I hope the injured lady recovers okay.
